Overview

The Vietnam Health Improvement Project (VNHIP), a US-registered (501(c)(3)) charity, was started in 2008 by Joshua Solomon to bring medical knowledge and skills to disadvantaged people in Central Vietnam.

VNHIP has been working with families and children effected by HIV to help them both with the financial impact of not having a steady income and the social stigma associated with HIV by working on community and school education. We provide support for the children to order for necessary medication. VNHIP has been supporting 25 children living with HIV and more than 100 children affected by HIV in Quang Nam province and Da Nang city.

HIV has become an increasing problem in Vietnam. The number of new HIV infections has been on the rise in Vietnam. More than 4,540 HIV infections had been detected in the first half of 2017, raising the total number in the country to 209,590 cases. Of them, 56% are getting anti-retroviral (ARV) therapy. Included in the 10,000 new HIV infections are a few hundred Vietnamese infants born with HIV.

Objective:

By the end of 2022, 30 children (living with HIV or affected by HIV) will enjoy their inclusive education and achieve better education results at their schools through improving life-skills, educational conditions and supportive behaviours of the teachers and parents of other children.

Expected outputs:

  • Output 1: 30 children will improve their life-skills
  • Output 2: 30 children will enjoy their studying at home and schools
  • Output 3: More than 200 parents and 30 teachers will increase their knowledge and awareness about HIV and social inclusion of children living with HIV or affected by HIV

The activities to achieve the expected output 1

Activity 1.1: Provide training on life-skill development: To help the children further develop and refine the skills that they need to successfully navigate the challenges of life, VNHIP has developed a training course on life-skill development for children living with HIV and those affected by HIV.

This is an interactive course that teaches through active learning and group discussions. Every month, the children will focus on one skill or value that is important to living a successful and happy life.

The ultimate goal of the course is to equip the children so that they feel better prepared to find their places in the world. This course aims to restore some of the regularity, confidence, and life skills that these children have unfairly missed out on in their young lives.

We will strive to promote positive thinking that lays the foundations for a happy, healthy, and productive life. This requires a honing of the skills of self-awareness and self-confidence which are the cornerstones of this kind of lifestyle.

The children will learn specific skills that they can apply to their daily lives that will lead to the development of better relationships with others and with themselves.

The activities to achieve the expected output 2

  • Activity 2.1: Provide scholarships for paying the school fees and other admission costs of new schooling years. Each child needs 130 USD a year at the beginning of the school year.
  • Activity 2.2: Provide bikes for going to school and studying facilities such as study desk, book shelf, desk lamps, bags and pens. We will pay a home-visit to assess needs of each child to make an appropriate intervention plan for him/her.
  • Activity 2.3: Provide the monthly allowance for children’s basic need such as food, clothes and living costs. For the very poor families, we will provide 40 USD a month for a child to get enough food and other items necessary for basic living.

The activities to achieve the expected output 3

Activity 3.1: Organize meetings/workshops with parents and teachers to increase knowledge and awareness about HIV and to accept the children living with HIV to study with other children at school.

How would your intervention have an impact on the quality life of the children?

This project will enable the children to perform better at their school, with their family and in their community. With their improved life-skills and education, these children will be able to pursue study at higher levels and contribute to a successful life in the future.
