Espaço Ser – Casa Matheus Campos is a NGO created to pilot innovative prevention support against suicide and depression to children and teenagers in Brazil.

It was founded in 2018 by the couple Tania and Fernando Campos, after the death of their son in 2017, at the age of 14, a victim of suicide.

In collaboration with Help for Hope Espaço Ser is launching “Help for Life” a project that aims at creating awareness and bringing innovative forms of support to 1,000+ children and teenagers in 7+ pilot schools in the Sao Paolo area.

The Goals are:

  • –  Emotional stabilization of young people and their families;
  • –  Improvement of the quality of life;
  • –  Promotion of health and well-being;
  • – Real cure for Self-distructive symptoms.

Espaço Ser treatment is complementary to the psychological and psychiatric treatments already in place. It includes innovative forms of addressing mental health issues in youth, such as yoga, tai chi and music therapy amongst others, which are emerging as promising and effective new treatments in this domain.

The NGO counts with the guidance of a therapist with more than 45 years of experience in extreme cases of depression. It follows a Protocol of Therapeutic Treatment based on the principles established by the WHO (World Health Organization), through the Ottawa Charter.

Hope for Life Project

According to the UNICEF and WHO (World Health Organization), up to 20 per cent of adolescents globally experience mental disorders, and around 15 per cent of adolescents in low-and middle-income countries have considered suicide.

According to the latest data:

Up to 20 per cent of adolescents globally experience mental disorders. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15-19 years-old worldwide.

Around 15 per cent of adolescents in low-and middle-income countries have considered suicide.

Every year more than 10,000 suicide cases occurred in Brazil, the major part of it are in men and young people.

The target for this project is:

to implement a mental diseases conscientious action in

at least 1,000 students between 11 and 17 years old, in order to motivate young

people to share your suffering feelings and, through that, looking for professional /

medical help sensibly when needed, and possibly avoid future suicides.

The main idea is:

according to a previous school agreement, to supply (in the school environment) one morning of a practical activity, psychologist attendance and oral presentation.

Goal at the end of project:

  • –  At least 1,000 students touched by a different view and perspective about mental diseases / depression and suicide;
  • –  Students and families who are suffering from mental diseases / depression are going to be invited to join Espaço SER and continue their treatment;
  • – Activities offered: Yoga, Tai Chi Chuan and Music Therapy

Total Investment Needed: 7'671.48 CHF

Starting beginning March 2020 up to end of November 2020 (Brazil school period) – 9 months

  • -students and teachers:

1 mandatory practical (PICs) activity with a qualified professional

1 optional conversation with a psychologist
1 gift and natural snack

4th school activity at EMEF Imperatriz, a public school in a high-risk area

This activity introduced yoga to 138 students. While some students appreciated the practice, many remained resistant. The school's psychologist has spoken with 7 students, highlighting the significant psychological challenges faced by both students and parents.

Kung Fu practice for 194 elementary school II students at Escola Municipal Joaninha Grassi Fagundes in the north of São Paulo

We are thrilled to announce the kickoff of the HELP FOR LIFE Program in partnership with HELP FOR HOPE at Escola Municipal Joaninha Grassi Fagundes in the north of São Paulo. On May 30th, we introduced Kung Fu practice to 194 elementary school II students, guided by the expertise of Master Cláudio Moraes and the assistance of Linda Mattoli. The event began with Fernando Campos addressing the students, sharing insights about the work at Espaço SER, the practices we use, and their benefits in calming us down, addressing anxiety, moments of sadness, and finding purpose in life. He highlighted the importance of connecting what we learn in school to our daily lives. We also provided psychological care with the support of Psychoanalyst Amanda Pelcerman, and for families and faculty members, we have planned an insightful lecture that will touch on various aspects, including the importance of caring for the emotional health of children and young people.

Complementary and Integrative Practices of Kung Fu at the Senac school

On March 2, 2023, Help for Life held a Complementary and Integrative Practices of Kung Fu at the Senac school. 127 High School students, aged between 14 and 22, attended the activity.​ The benefits of this practice are numerous, mentioning some are, discipline, concentration, focus on the present, maintenance of self-esteem, etc.​ Also, Psychologist, Cristina Toloi provided psychological assistance to 13 students who had various symptoms such as great sadness, anxiety, and suffering. They were welcomed and instructed to seek help.​

Tai Chi Activity for 63 Students by master André Scholz

The practice of Taichi Chuan by master André Scholz, with the assistance of teacher Alexandra, was given to 63 students, aged from 11 to 15 years old. The students practiced for 40 minutes each group. At the same time, psychologist Ricardo R. Araújo provided psychological support to 4 students through welcoming listening.

Yoga Bliss with 158 Students at São Paulo, at the esteemed Colégio Santo Agostinho

The yoga session began with invigorating stretching exercises and balance postures, setting the stage for a mind-body connection journey. 🌿 The soothing tunes in the background created a harmonious atmosphere as the students formed a massive circle for the Circular Dance.

Tai Chi activities among a huge quantity of teens in Brazil as part of their dynamic activities for their mental health and wellness.​ Tai Chi, originally developed in ancient China for self-defense, evolved into a graceful form of exercise that's now used for stress reduction and to help with a variety of other health conditions.​

With Help for Hope's support and your generous donations, Espaço SER was able to conduct Reiki activities among a huge quantity of teens in Brazil as part of their dynamic activities for their mental health and wellness.​ Reiki is a type of energy healing. According to practitioners, energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or even emotional pain​

First campaign intervention
